Blood Brother The Gene That Rocked My Family offers a brave and nuanced take on one of the most radioactive issues of our times genetic testing. When her beloved brother, Jim, is diagnosed with Huntington's disease - a fatal brain disease - author Mona Gable is suddenly thrust into alien, frightening territory without a road map to guide her. Still, as she recovers from the shock of her brother's death, decisions must be made. To get tested or not? To inform her children that they may also be at risk? To speak openly and publicly about a disease that historically has been cloaked in secrecy and shame? This is a must-listen for anyone who has grappled with similar issues or who suspects that they, too, may have inherited a deadly gene.

Gable writes about women's issues, health, science, travel, and international issues. Her work has appeared in Prevention, Fast Company, Los Angeles Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Pacific Standard, the Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. From 2011 to 2013, she was the feminist editor of BlogHer.com and has been a contributor to the Huffington Post since 2006. Her essays have appeared in several anthologies, including The Maternal Is Political Women Writers at the Intersection of Motherhood and Social Change and the best-selling collection of Salon essays, Mothers Who Think Tales of Real-Life Parenthood. She is also a facilitator with the OpEd Project, a venture aimed at increasing the range of voices shaping public opinion.

Blood Brother The Gene That Rocked My Family (Audible Audio Edition) Mona Gable Angela Starling Audible Studios Books

Mona Gable brings to life -- like a fine investigative journalist -- how she solved a family mystery, scared the hell out of herself in the process, and sought to protect her kids by uncloaking the ravaging, relentless advance of an inherited disease that killed her brother. Detached at first as a way of protecting herself, Gable brings us increasingly into her own dawning awareness, horror and eventual acceptance. She doesn't hold back -- there are heroes and villains -- because that's how she rolls as a writer. She does all of us a favor by showing that courage sometimes comes merely from plowing ahead into the inevitable, come what may. A bravura, highly readable story that weighs in at about the length of a good novella.

Blood Brother The Gene That Rocked My Family (Audible Audio Edition) Mona Gable Angela Starling Audible Studios Books Reviews

I am personally impacted by Huntington's disease as 2 of my 3 sons have tested positive and 1 is at risk. This made me cry often because it hit home, but it is a must read for all HD families. The more we read, the more we understand and learn and grow. I want to thank Mona for painstakingly writing such a truthful and revealing book. I could not put it down. HD is my mission.
I could not put this down. This is an absolutely wrenching and exquisitely written story about Mona Gable's discovery of a dark and chilling family secret that her brother died of Huntington's Disease, the same hereditary illness that killed folk singer Woody Guthrie, and that she may share his fate. Artfully weaving together the political, scientific and personal aspects of her story--including a trip to Washington D.C. to lobby for more humane legislation for Huntington's sufferers, her anguish over her brother's death and her own apprehensions--this is just a riveting read. I highly recommend this book.
Meticulously researched and beautifully told, this memoir chronicles the despair of a family rocked, then split, by the news that a beloved brother has a fatal genetic disease that could strike siblings, parents, children, and unborn generations to come. I highly recommend this unique perspective on Huntington's disease, genetic testing, and the desperate need for a cure.
This is a beautifully crafted story of love and science and family. Mona Gable's fierce honesty is so real in her love as a sister for her beloved brother and her skill as a journalist in getting to the heart of this story about Huntington's disease. She also doesn't flinch from the agony of keeping family secrets and the terrible suffering that can result from keeping up appearances. Her voice grabs you up from beginning to end. I highly recommend it.
Writing with a sure hand and a journalist's eye for detail, Mona Gable has turned out a wonderful book. "Blood Brother The Gene that Rocked my Family" is an emotional true story about the choices the author faced when her brother was diagnosed with Huntington's disease. The book's intimate style made me feel as though I were gaining an education alongside the author as she sought to learn more about this rare and terrible disease. She paints a portrait of a woman who teeters between emotional wreck and clear headed fact finder and shows us that comfort can be found in knowledge. Her choice to be tested for Huntington's while knowing there is not yet a cure presents one side of an important and complex conversation about hereditary disease, family responsibility to future generations and the myriad ways we deal with fear.
Mona Gable has written a brave and deeply affecting personal account of what happened when she learned a beloved brother was suffering from Huntington's disease, a devastating, and always deadly, illness. She learned that while Huntington's is hereditary, it is not always passed on to every child in a family. Weaving meticulous research into her story, Gable details what goes into one of the most important decisions of her life. The mother of two young adults, Gable decides if she should be tested for the gene. Does she want to know? And do her children have a right to know? Blood Brother is a riveting and thought provoking read.
I read this book from start to finish without stopping and from there was inspired to search for other places this writer had published stories and ordered them all. It is a real skill to take intricate and devastating medical information and weave it in so seamlessly with personal experience to create a powerful, transformative work that engages and informs the reader. To be precise and I don't use this word casually - it is riveting.

Reading Mona Gable's "Blood Brother" evokes the same sigh and sentiment I share with my young adult children after seeing a beautiful and difficult movie. We sit devastated and awed by the amount of pain combined with grace and artistry.
The author uses top notch craft to handle her own story as well as her brother's and the disease itself. The comparison with cinema is the way she can evoke all senses creating a visual of her experience and how changed she has been because of it.

Thank you to Mona Gable and SheBooks for bringing this work to us!
