Erebus Sleeping Gods Series #2 (Audible Audio Edition) Ralph Kern Shaun Grindell Tantor Audio Books

I recently finished reading Erebus and it was an awesome book. It was not at all what I was expecting and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. Kern is an extremely talented author, I honestly loved Endeavor (and now Erebus) more than anything I've ever read from Kim Stanley Robinson, Arthur C Clarke, etc.

Reading the books, you wouldn't be able to tell that they are Kern's first novels, they are very well written and have extremely interesting plots.

Erebus starts out as a detective story, which sort of worried me at first since I hate detective stories, but very quickly it turned out to be even more of a fascinating read than I had hoped. The ending was especially great, I did NOT see that coming!

Here's to hoping for some more awesome books from Kern, this book and Endeavor have turned him into one of my favorite authors.

Erebus Sleeping Gods Series #2 (Audible Audio Edition) Ralph Kern Shaun Grindell Tantor Audio Books Reviews

Thoroughly enjoyable space opera. If you want something other than straight up military SF you have to read U.K. authors and Kern is no exception. If you like exploration-focused SF (of which there is far too little imo) you should like this series. My only potential criticism is that he seems to be leading into a stereotypical galactic mega-war. I hope that's not the case but we'll see.

Bring on book 3!
I liked the characters, although it was depressing that they kept getting WHUPPED.. It would have been nice if they had at least been a bit more equal. Some of the e-attacks are a bit unrealistic.. like they would not know that air gapping the systems would stop an virus attack by communications.. seems unlikely it would be that easy.. but a pretty entertaining read ! Good job.
Ok, ok, if I had to put this book on a spectrum with Never Let me Go or On Such a Full Sea, would it be more like three stars? Sure, but that's not fair. I believe it was Ebert that said art should be judged against what it was trying to achieve. And on that front, this book stands out.

Better than the Expanse (which I lost interest in after investing in three books), or even Verner Vinge (which I liked and quite enjoyed, despite the often cardboard characters). And it improved upon his first book (which I enjoyed, but, at least in the edition I read, had a one or two spots with a mis-phrased aphorism or slightly clumsy grammar - and editor's job is never done...).

If you're looking for some fun sci-fi where the author obviously invested some time and energy doing their research and balancing the necessities of entertainment and realism, and spent some time in character development, pick this book up!
(especially if you're like me, and love you're classic sci-fi, but roll your eyes at author's that simply plug cliches into their plots and give them names).

Finally - I have to give some resounding agreement to the previous reviewer that mentioned they don't usually like detective stories, but liked this one. Exactly.
I'm ecstatic to report that the second book in the Sleeping Gods Series is just as excellent as it's predecessor!

As a background, I am not a usual fan of the sci-fi genre. As I explained in my review for the first in the series Endeavour A Sleeping Gods Novel, I came across the book and decided to try it out on a whim as I was getting bored with my usual genres. I can honestly say it totally blew me away --> applied theoretical science + incredible writing talent + imagination for days = one satisfied reader. Like a fat lord devouring a five-course Sunday dinner, Endeavour was delicious to the last morsel.

However, because of how original the first book was, I actually procrastinated for *months* before reading the second book. I guess I didn't realize that subconsciously I was actually dreading the act of picking Erebus up and having to muddle my way through a second book that could, of course, not be anywhere near as fascinating as the first book (isn't that how it *always* goes with book series? I mean, with less complex books, usually you can make it to book five or six in a series before becoming fatigued or repetitive, but for something as complicated and high-tech as the Sleeping Gods Series, no way could the author pull off another blockbuster..!). Part of the reason as well for the delay is because I'm not the biggest fan of crime drama or police thrillers, which is what I had assumed Erebus to be. After all, the first book was so incredibly ground-breaking in the realistic draw of science and writing of the future, there wasn't much remaining to write about in order to have a second decent book now, was there?

Boy, was I wrong.

Finally, I decided enough was enough and I had to give Erebus a go. Once I settled down to read the first chapter, I was caught hook, line and sinker. I was silently kicking myself for waiting this long to read the book while thoroughly enjoying each turn of the page (i.e. click of the kindle).

Contrary to the first book, I took my time reading Erebus - I wanted to make sure to savour the action, science and plot development as I went. Of course, there were multiple unexpected plot twists that were excellently placed to carry the reader inside the storyline.

After finishing Erebus, I excitedly dove into reading Kern's short story anthologies that he had written as part of larger author groups. To my dismay, I realized that I *only* liked Kern's short stories, and that many of the other authors were typical of what I would have expected of sci-fi writers Ideas too far-fetched for the reader to connect with (or maybe they were great ideas but stilted/underdeveloped writing styles or minimal plot/character development failed to carry the ideas to fruition). This isn't to say that if you like sci-fi you wouldn't enjoy these anthologies, but perhaps for a picky, not-usual-sci-fi reader such as myself, it was not what I was expecting (I have read some other sci-fi books, but would not consider myself a connoisseur of the genre. Another author that I happened to like a couple books of was David Simpson and his Post-Human Omnibus Edition (1-4) (Post-Human Series)).

All in all, particularly after sampling other sci-fi works, I can decisively say that I truly enjoy Kern's stories and, for me at least, his evocative writing and excellent research will continue to distinguish him head and shoulders above many others in the sci-fi genre. I eagerly await the next Sleeping Gods Novel!!
I gave a five after reading the author's goals for this book, and realizing that he had done a good job of realizing those goals. I don't know why anyone would name a ship by an alternative name for hell, but there is historical context without any explanation in the book or the internet. There is hardly any relationship between this book and Endeavour except at the end where everything is tidied up. We are in the same universe at a slightly later time period so that what was being developed in Endeavour is now being utilized. The story is definitely an exciting who-dun-it as we chase a suspected terrorist through the universe, but he doesn't act quite like one would expect a terrorist to act. It's useful to keep in mind that the theme for this book and Endeavour is the Sleeping Gods. One scary thought that I don't think the author considered is that the alcubierre drive was used as a weapon in the story, but it could have been weaponized into an indefensible weapon.
